Synopsis: Colonel Jack O'Neill wakes up from a cryogenic freeze and is greeted by General Trofsky and Dr. Raleigh, who tell him that he's inside the SGC but the years is now 2077 and the rest of SG-1 is long dead. On their last mission, SG-1 had traveled to a planet which intelligence suggested was ruled by a Goa'uld. O'Neill apparently had been sent back through the Stargate already frozen while the bodies of his team members were sent back already dead. While O'Neill is trying to adjust to the loss of team and his new environment, Trofsky and Raleigh connect him to a device meant to stimulate memory in hopes of discovering which race in the galaxy possessed the technology to save O'Neill from the Goa'uld. His thoughts are projected on a holographic screen. His first thought is the Nox, who could revive their dead and make themselves invisible. Next he considers the Asgard. The device creates a shock inside his head and Raleigh says he should rest for awhile.
Next thing we see is that Daniel Jackson is still alive, albeit inside a pod similar to O'Neill's. Scene cuts to Carter who's encountered the same fate. They increase the doses of their drugs on her since she has Naquada in her system. Each of them thinks that the rest of SG-1 is dead.
Raleigh hooks Carter up to a memory device. Carter questions the necessity of the device but in the end goes along with it. Raleigh questions Carter about how Apophis was defeated and she explains. Scene cuts to Daniel who is being questioned by Trofsky. He's been asked questions about the other Goa'uld SG-1 encountered during their travels. Daniel mentions Sokar, Heru-Ur, and Hathor.
The next scene is back at the real SGC, where Teal'c awakens in the infirmary. General Hammond and Dr. Fraiser are there to greet him. He asks where the rest of SG-1 is, they tell him they don't know. He has been unconscious for three weeks and is quite possibly only alive because Dr. Fraiser refused to leave his side. The rest of this moving, intense scene between General Hammond and Teal'c is transcribed under the quotes section. In the end, Teal'c regretfully informs General Hammond that he is resigning from the Stargate program.
Meanwhile, O'Neill wakes up only to hear Trofsky and Raleigh speaking Goa'uld. Once they leave, he knocks the remaining guard out, steals his clothes, and wanders for awhile around the base.
Scene shifts back to Teal'c, who is given a soldier's farewell through the Stargate. He and Hammond say their good-byes, and he leaves on the verge of tears.
O'Neill has found a hallway similar to the Goa'uld corridors in "Within the Serpent's Grasp" and "The Serpent's Lair" complete with Horus and Serpent guards wandering through them. Because of the device still hooked up to his brain he has another flashback. After he has gone through the hallway, he finds the section where Carter is being held. He wakes her up, she has a flashback, he tells her the people at the base are really Goa'uld, and once she is dressed they do some more wandering through the corridors. They run into some more guards plus Trosky and Raleigh and O'Neill hauls Carter behind a pillar while she has another flashback we, fortunately, don't see. They continue onward and find Daniel.
Next they presumably look for Teal'c but only succeed in finding that all the doorways are blocked. They reach the gate room and O'Neill discovers the gate is plastic. Hathor appears out of nowhere, greets the team, and wants them to tell her all the information she wants to know. When they refuse she tells them that she has another means of acquiring that information--in her possession is a Goa'uld ready for a host. This "To Be Continued" episode ends with Hathor holding up the Goa'uld and asking which of the team members should become the new host.
Review: 7/10
Plot: What plot? I didn't see a plot. Oh, other than that SG-1 has been captured by Hathor and one of them will become a host. Too bad 50% of the episode was entirely flashback and 25% was SG-1 wandering through the facility. That left 25% to elaborate on the plot. Granted, it's quite a doozy of a cliffhanger, but the plot could have been better elaborated and more...realistic.Realism: Alright, so I've got some nit picking to do with the writers. One, how in the world would Daniel being having flashbacks to an event he wasn't even around for, huh? He remembers Hathor turning O'Neill into a Jaffa during "Hathor," but he wasn't even there! Plus, Jack was under Hathor's influence so how would he have even remembered it well enough to tell Daniel? The only thing I can think of is that they saw it on video playback. Unless, of course, Hathor was smart enough to shut those down too... Anyway, on to my second major nit pick. Wouldn't records of SG-1's travels have been kept long into the future? Why would the SGC in 2077 have to ask SG-1 about the races they encountered? Were all the records supposedly destroyed in a fire? Even in that case, wouldn't multiple copies have been kept? I realize SG-1 was drugged and coerced into revealing those memories but something tells me they would've recognized this fact and at least asked about it. Third, why on earth was SG-1 going to a planet that they knew was Goa'uld without backup and without better preparation? I seriously doubt Hammond would have authorized that. All I can say is that there'd better be some good explaining about what happened to SG-1 on the planet and why Teal'c wasn't killed by Hathor but left by the gate in the second part of this. Fourth, Hathor found all this material to reproduce the SGC how? She was only on Earth for a week or so, yet she could design a locker to the minute details, design a life support system to maintain SG-1's lives, manipulate brain waves, etc. all in a about a year and a half. That's pretty impressive, and also a bit unrealistic considering she had to get supplies, guards, doctors, engineers, Jaffa, etc. to serve her during that time. On the other hand, all around the performances were great. O'Neill, Carter, and Daniel react realistically to their situation and Hathor's return, and the scene between Teal'c and Hammond is amazing. Trofsky and Raleigh were as cold toward SG-1 as anyone allied to the Goa'uld would be. But somebody should have analyzed the plot holes a little bit more carefully....
Action: Nope, none except for the flashbacks and O'Neill knocking Carter's guard out.
Angst Level: Well I'm a bit angsty over who's going to get the Goa'uld and the repercussions on the team in next season. But besides that, there's the angst shown by O'Neill over the loss of his team, and of course the tremendous scene between Teal'c, Hammond, and Fraiser. Of course, I also felt a jolt of pain myself when they stuck that device into O'Neill's head...
Special Effects: I admit it, I liked the huge black biting worm-thing called a Goa'uld that Hathor held up at the end. Hathor's reappearance out of nowhere is pretty neat, almost like Nox technology. The holograph screen where their memories are replayed is neat, especially when it kept fritzing out on O'Neill. Other than that, though, there's not much in the way of special effects...except, of course, in the flashbacks.
Set and Costumes: The futuristic clothes everyone was wearing were pretty nice, especially that white guard outfit O'Neill and Carter wore (oh, my!). We also get the serpent/hawk Jaffa outfits, Hathor's skimpy clothing, and a sleeker version of the standard SG team uniform. The set wasn't anything new since we've seen the SGC in just about every episode and we've seen the Goa'uld corridors in "Within the Serpent's Grasp" and "The Serpent's Lair."
O'Neill factor: Great acting by Richard Dean Anderson when O'Neill finds out that the rest of his team is dead. Such angst! Such confusion! Such a bare chest! :) Such a sight in that white guard outfit! Ahem, but anyway, there're also two very interesting scenes between him and Carter. One, when he finds her wrapped only in a blanket and struggles with himself not to look underneath it (he appears to fail), and two when he hauls her away from the guards in the Goa'uld corridor and holds on to her, tightly, after the guards are gone and while they're discussing removing the devices from their heads. Poses some interesting questions about the Sam/Jack relationship and all the Unresolved Sexual Tension (UST) between those two. The writers of the TV show have said that there won't be a relationship between them, but some of these scenes speak differently. There's definitely a strong undercurrent running through their relationship. The episode also makes you wonder if he's going to get the Goa'uld at the end since he is the leader of the team....
Daniel factor: Not much Daniel here (well, except for the bare chest scenes...hee hee :) ), and what is here has a lot less hair than normal since he got a really short hair cut. He gets a cute line ("I have more questions but that can wait") and a cute little shooing motion with his hands when Hathor reappears, but that's about it. There is the possibility that he'll become the next Stargate member to be a Goa'uld host, though....
Carter factor: Like Daniel, not much of her around until O'Neill finds her (although there is a lot of bare back in one particular scene). See "O'Neill Factor" above for questions posed by the Jack/Sam scenes. It was nice to see her skepticism when Raleigh was putting the device in her head. Even drugged, she questions what's being done to her. On the other hand, she's already had a Goa'uld, so let's hope Hathor doesn't give her the newly matured Goa'uld.
Teal'c factor: The scene with Hammond and Dr. Fraiser has now taken the spot as my favorite Teal'c moment. The pure emotion that Christopher Judge placed into it is amazing. You can see his attempts to restrain his emotions. Teal'c is so dedicated to SG-1 and saving them that he will give up the hope that the Tauri will help free his people from slavery in order to find them.
Overall Team factor: The team's separated for most of the episode and never fully together since Teal'c is on Earth and the rest are...wherever they are. However, there's an amazing sense of loss at the beginning when everyone thinks everyone else is dead. O'Neill and Daniel keep coming back to that question, "How did they die?" Of course, it's interesting that they don't do much searching for Teal'c, although presumably that's what they're doing in the gate room at the end. In addition, Teal'c does not want to be at the SGC without knowing what happened to the rest of the team. My personal assumption is that he tells Hammond that he's left the base for Chu'lac, but when he gets there is going to turn right around and go searching for his missing teammates. Quite a testament to the devotion these people have for one another!
My Thoughts: If you ignore all the silly plot holes, flashbacks, and times SG-1 goes past the K-5 door, this really isn't a horrible episode. Or at least the last ten to fifteen minutes aren't. It leaves us with a nasty little predicament at the end--who'll get the Goa'uld?--and also what'll happen to Teal'c now that he's left the SGC. So, without further adieu, it's speculation time for next season! Here's the possibilities. 1) O'Neill gets the Goa'uld. Being the leader of the team, he'd also insist on being the host so this possibility's the most likely. Wow, what an interesting character twist this would be! Of course, it would also be the most damaging since O'Neill knows the most about Earth and their military defenses. 2) Carter gets the Goa'uld. I sure hope not. They'd end up wrecking her memories from Jolinar which I really don't want to see. 3) Daniel gets the Goa'uld. Hathor seems to have a fondness for him anyway, maybe she wants a Goa'uld she can spend the rest of her life with? Hey, it's possible and it would give Daniel the opportunity to find Sha're, albeit while possessed by a Goa'uld. On the other hand, Daniel's been through so much already, do we have to turn him into a Goa'uld? Let's not, please? 4) The Goa'uld invades someone else before it gets the chance to invade one the team members. I get the impression that Trofsky and Raleigh were not Goa'uld but rather humans "living in luxury" helping Hathor. Hey, it could happen. 5) No one gets the Goa'uld. Who knows, maybe Teal'c will miraculously find them and save them? Along those same lines, 6) Heck, Teal'c could even be the one to get the Goa'uld. After all, we know his symbiote isn't working properly since he was unconscious for three weeks, very unusual for a Jaffa. We can also rest assured that he's not going to give up looking for SG-1 until he finds them. Probably not the most likely choice, but it's possible. 7) There's a Tok'ra or a spy inside Hathor's facility who stops the implantation. 8) One of the team members decides not to risk the others' lives and gives Hathor all the information she wants to know. Not very likely since we know they'd die before handing over such important information. 9) Hathor gives them the chance to debate who's going to get it and they somehow escape. 10) ????? Guess we'll just have to wait until next summer to find out!
Related Episodes: Ugh, a flashback episode. (Come on, give us some story--especially in the season finale!!!) There's flashbacks to "The Nox," "Thor's Chariot," "The Fifth Race," "The Torment of Tantalus," "Within the Serpent's Grasp," "The Serpent's Lair," "The Serpent's Song," "Hathor," "Secrets," and "Message in a Bottle." The Naquada in Carter's system must have come from "In the Line of Duty" since that's the only place where she might have got it.
Daniel Jackson's History/Linguistic/Mythology Lesson: None
Sam Carter's Physics Lesson: None
Important Stargate Information: Not really, other than that the events of this episode are probably going to play a big part in future episodes, especially if Hathor follows through on her threat and gives the Goa'uld to somebody on the team.
Alien Species/Background: Hathor's back and she wants some answers about what's going on in the Empire. She's been building forces for the past year and a half and obviously wants to rival the System Lords one day.
Important everyday life stuff we learn from Stargate: Just because somebody or something is "out of mind" doesn't mean that they don't exist. In other words, don't forget about your enemies just because you haven't seen them in awhile or else they'll sneak up on you when you least expect it. If you wake up and somebody tells you you've been cryogenically frozen for the past 79 years, chances are you shouldn't believe them. When someone tells you they want to "stimulate" your memory, don't believe them--they just want to put a puncture wound in your skull. (I'm still saying ouch over that one!) When someone tells you not to think and you have a memory device hooked up to your brain, try very hard not to think. Even if you're inside a place you think you know very well, be sure you open all doors and lockers just to make sure you're not inside a Goa'uld facility. Snakes and hawks don't go well together unless they're controlled by someone with bad breath.
Quotes:
Raleigh: "It's okay, Colonel O'Neill, you're in the SGC. You're going to be fine. No, don't try to speak, Colonel, give it some time."
Trofsky: "Welcome back to the land of the living, Colonel. I'm Major General Trofsky, this is Doctor Raleigh."
Raleigh: "Maybe we can try to answer some of the questions that are probably weighing heavily on your mind."
Trofsky: "First of all, I regret to inform you that everyone on your team, Dr. Daniel Jackson, Captain Samantha Carter, and a Jaffa named Teal'c, are all deceased."
Raleigh: "As a matter of fact, I imagine everyone you ever knew is probably gone now."
Trofsky: "You see, Colonel, the year is now 2077."Raleigh: "How are you feeling, Colonel?"
O'Neill: "A bit confused."
Trofsky: "Understandable. You've been in cryogenic hibernation for almost 79 years."
O'Neill: "How?"
Raleigh: "That's a good question. We were hoping you could tell us."
Trofsky: "You were sent back through the Stargate already frozen, we're guessing by some advanced culture. Your C.O. at the time, a General Hammond, and Dr. Fraiser felt that to thaw you without the proper technique would probably kill you. They put you in a deep freeze until such time as the technology was developed to properly revive you."
Raleigh: "Colonel, do you have any idea what happened to you on that planet?"
O'Neill: "No, Ma'am. General? I'd prefer not to answer any more questions, walk around the base a little, get my bearings."
Trofsky: "Of course. A good idea, actually. I'd be happy to show you the rest of the facility. You can disconnect him from these machines for a limited time, can't you, Doctor?"
Raleigh: "For an hour or so. But he needs theromatic infusion for his tissues to function properly."
Trofsky: "Well I'll have him back in less than an hour."Trofsky: "Has it changed much?"
O'Neill: "There's no place like home, Sir. How many SG teams are there now, Sir?"
Trofsky: "Twenty-eight here on Earth, another ten occupying off-world colonies."
O'Neill: "So we finally did that, huh? Populated other planets?"
Trofsky: "Affirmative."
O'Neill: "General, what happened to my team?"
Trofsky: "They didn't make it."
O'Neill: "I got that. They didn't make it back through the gate, they didn't survive the thawing process, what?"
Trofsky: "Their bodies were sent back but they were already dead. I'm sorry, Colonel. It was a long time ago."
O'Neill: "Maybe for you."Trofsky: "So, Colonel, do you have any recollection what happened on your last mission?"
O'Neill: "I wish I did, Sir. I remember intel suggested the planet we were going to was ruled by a Goa'uld, but I don't remember anything after we stepped through that gate."
Trofsky: "Can you think of any reason why the Goa'uld might have saved your life? Sent you back?"
O'Neill: "Certainly not their M.O."
Trofsky: "We feel whoever did help you was able to beat back the Goa'uld in order to do so. We'd love to know who could do that."
O'Neill: "So would I, Sir."
Trofsky: "We have a new technology that might help you remember. We'd like to give it a try if you feel up to it."
O'Neill: "Sure."
Trofsky: "We'd like to get started right away. Our outpost planets are at war with the Goa'uld. Frankly, we're losing. I'm hoping whoever helped you 79 years ago can help us now."Raleigh, holding up a metal button-like device: "The technology was a gift from the Tok'ra."
O'Neill: "We're still friends with them, huh?"
Trofsky: "Yes. It's been quite a beneficial alliance."
O'Neill: "Just not much help in the outpost colonies, I take it?"
Trofsky: "No."
O'Neill, as Raleigh places the device to O'Neill's head and pushes it in (ouch!): "Owww!!! God, what is that?!"
Raleigh: "It's okay, Colonel. It's in. That's all the pain you'll feel."
O'Neill: "What a shame."
Raleigh: "As the Tok'ra explain it, this device stimulates the memory centers of your mind and amplifies it. Sort of like a capacitor for thoughts. And when it's hooked up to this device here it projects what the mind's eye is seeing holographically."
O'Neill: "Beautiful."
Raleigh: "Now, all you have to do is focus your thoughts and guide the right memories to the surface."
O'Neill: "How do I do that?"
Raleigh: "We'll lead you through it. It's kind of like a high tech version of hypnosis. We've introduced a very light sedative through those tubes. You should be feeling those effects by now."
O'Neill: "Oh yeah."
Raleigh: "Great. Let's get going."Raleigh: "There. How does that feel, Captain?"
Carter: "Okay. Ah! It hurts a little. Listen, is this really necessary?"
Raleigh: "Well, it's important that we know who would have the technology to do this."
Carter: "Why?"
Raleigh: "Because, Captain Carter, anyone with that technology would be a very powerful ally against Apophis."
Carter: "Apophis? Isn't he dead?"
Raleigh, fighting back very obvious shock: "Well of course he is. We're merely trying to stimulate the region of your memory that involves doing battle with the Goa'uld. It might help us in our current battles."
Carter: "Well...we did fight the Goa'uld a lot."Trofsky: "What's wrong?"
Daniel: "Nothing. I just...I really need to know exactly what happened to my friends."
Trofsky: "As I said, they were sent back through the gate. They were already dead. That's all I know."
Daniel: "What about General Hammond?"
Trofsky: "Well, I'm happy to report he lived to the ripe old age of 93."
Daniel: "So everyone I ever knew basically is gone."
Trofsky: "I'm afraid so."Fraiser: "It's okay, it's okay. You're in the SGC, Teal'c."
Hammond: "Good to have you back, Teal'c."
Teal'c: "General Hammond."
Fraiser, as Teal'c suddenly sits up: "Easy, easy."
Teal'c: "Where are the rest of SG-1?"
Hammond: "Good question. We were hoping you could tell us."Hammond: "When you didn't return we sent SG teams 3 & 7 after you. They found you lying next to the Stargate. There was no trace of Colonel O'Neill, Captain Carter, or Dr. Jackson. We assume they were captured."
Fraiser: "You have no memory of this, Teal'c?"
Teal'c: "I do. It was a mixture of Horus and Serpent guards, a very unusual combination."
Hammond: "Serving what Goa'uld?"
Teal'c: "That I do not know. General Hammond, I will return to the planet immediately to search for the answers."
Hammond: "I can't let you do that, Teal'c."
Teal'c: "General Hammond. I will not remain idle while my friends may be in danger on this planet."
Fraiser: "Teal'c, you've been unconscious for three weeks."
Teal'c: "That is not possible. My symbiote would have awakened me long before the period of three weeks."
Fraiser: "You were barely alive, Teal'c. You had substantial internal injury."
Hammond: "Dr. Fraiser spent most of the three weeks at your side. I am convinced it was her refusal to give up that kept you alive."
Teal'c: "I am in your debt, Dr. Fraiser. General Hammond, permit me to return to this planet to search for my friends. If their bodies were not found by my side then they are prisoners."
Hammond: "If they're prisoners, they're long gone from that planet. We sent out UAVs, balloons, our best rescue teams, found nothing but scorched earth. There was not trace of them. They could be moved to any Goa'uld stronghold. You'd be searching for a needle in a very large haystack."
Teal'c: "Perhaps, but I must try."
Hammond: "Teal'c! I understand you're desire to do something, anything for SG-1. I feel the same way. But I cannot expend any more resources on this. I'm sorry. Request denied."
Teal'c: "If the people of the Tauri have given up hope on SG-1, then it is with great regret that I must leave this world and return to my people."
Hammond: "You mean you want to leave the SGC?"
Teal'c: "That is correct."
Hammond: "I can't let you do that, Teal'c. I won't let you do it."
Teal'c: "General Hammond. I hereby respectfully inform you that I must take my leave of the SGC. Therefore I am no longer under your command."
Hammond: "I can't allow you to do that. You represent too great a security risk."
Teal'c: "General Hammond. I would die before divulging any information about this world. I believe you know that."
Hammond: "Yes, I do."
Teal'c: "I will depart in one hour."Hammond: "Teal'c, you will be missed."
Teal'c: "I have learned much from you, General Hammond. For that I thank you."
Hammond: "I've learned a lot from you too, Teal'c. So we're even on that count. Take care of yourself."O'Neill: "Carter. Carter."
Carter: "I thought you were dead." She has a flashback to "Message in a Bottle." After O'Neill has removed the cord from her device, she mutters: "Whoa."
O'Neill: "Yeah. These things have a nasty habit of going off when you least expect it. Try not to think too much."
Carter: "They said..."
O'Neill: "They're Goa'uld, Carter."
Carter: "Daniel? Teal'c?"
O'Neill: "Don't know yet. Think you can walk?"
Carter: "Yeah. The drugs must've prevented me from sensing the Naquada."
O'Neill: "Trade clothes with that guy."Carter, about the Goa'uld hallway: "Wow, this looks just like the..."
O'Neill: "Don't think about it. You'll set that thing off...." He's right, because it goes off and she keels over in pain. O'Neill grabs her and hauls her behind a pillar as guards walk by.
Carter: "Can't we take these things off?"
O'Neill: "I don't know. You tell me. Mine's in pretty deep."
Carter: "Yeah, you're right. Pulling them out might cause some nasty collateral damage."
O'Neill: "Yeah, we don't want that."O'Neill: "Daniel. Daniel."
Daniel: "I don't understand. They said..."
Carter: "They're Goa'uld, Daniel." (Déjà vu, anyone?)
Daniel: "What year is it?"
Carter: "1999, more than likely."
Daniel: "So this is all a...hoax."
O'Neill: "Big hoax. I'd say so."
Daniel: "I have more questions but that can wait."
O'Neill: "Yeah. Come on."O'Neill, opening a door only to find it blocked by a wall: "Damn cost cutting."
Carter: "This facade is obviously part of a bigger Goa'uld facility. Complete with Horus and Serpent guards."
Daniel: "What? Horus and Serpent? That's kind of an odd alliance."Daniel, about the fake gate room: "I've never seen this place so deserted."
Carter: "Guess they figured they don't have to keep up the act if we're unconscious."
O'Neill, kicking the Stargate: "It's fake."
Daniel: "I don't understand. Who would've spend enough time in the base to be able to reproduce it in this kind of detail? You don't think Apophis....?"
Hathor, appearing out of nowhere: "Silence!"
O'Neill: "Oh, I was so hoping never to see you again." A whole lotta guards enter with zat guns aimed at SG-1.
Hathor, to Daniel: "We have indeed missed you, our Beloved."
Carter: "Daniel, don't let her breathe on you."
Hathor: "You think we would go to all these lengths if you were not already immune to that organism? Do you like our guards? We managed to lure them from the remote outposts of our enemies. We are quietly building our forces before the System Lords even know we are alive. But doing so is difficult when we have to proceed with little knowledge of the state of the Empire."
O'Neill: "Let me take a guess, it's just a wild guess, but that's where we come in, right?"
Carter: "We know more than you do."
Hathor: "Perhaps. We are prepared to offer you a life of luxury as servants in our royal court for sharing information. Deny us and you will not enjoy the alternative."
O'Neill: "You know, you really should do something about that breath."
Hathor: "How do we contact the Asgard so that we might ally with their forces?"
O'Neill: "Try Roswell. Little place in New Mexico."
Hathor: "What is the sequence of numbers necessary to open the barricade protecting your Stargate?" Carter doesn't answer her. "If you will not give us the information that we desire, we do have another means of retrieving it." She snaps her fingers and a Jaffa comes. "An opportunity has presented itself at a most fortuitous time. Our friend here is ready for a host." She pulls out a really wicked looking black Goa'uld, complete with a set of snapping teeth. "Tell us, which one of you shall it be?"
