Synopsis: We open in the Gate room, where the Stargate is dialing in. The technician gets the GDO code--it's Special Code 2--and Hammond orders them to open the iris. In steps Bra'tac, and in his arms is a wounded young Jaffa named Moac. They take Moac off to the infirmary where Dr. Fraiser says that he's bleeding internally. Bra'tac then tells Teal'c that Chu'lac was just attacked and destroyed...by Apophis. Cut to the opening credits.
So Teal'c and Bra'tac talk about this turn of events with O'Neill and the others. Apophis now controls Sokar's fleet ("The Devil You Know") and has way too much power. Teal'c says he'll go back to Chu'lac with Bra'tac, but Bra'tac says the fight is all over. It was swift and devastating. The only thing he could do was try to save Moac's life by bringing him to Earth. Carter says that doesn't make sense--why would Apophis attack his own people? Were there really that many Jaffa who opposed Apophis? Or, Daniel suggests, maybe Apophis just found it easier to kill all the Jaffa instead of trying to weed out who was faithful to him and who wasn't. While they're talking, though, Dr. Fraiser calls Hammond and says Bra'tac should get down to the operating room. Uh-oh.
Down in the OR, Fraiser says they did everything they could for Moac. Bra'tac talks to the young Jaffa a bit, then Moac dies. Bra'tac wearily tells Teal'c that he's getting old; he doesn't know if he has the strength to keep going anymore. He's never seen a Goa'uld turn on its own people like Apophis did to the Jaffa on Chu'lac. Maybe he was just trying to show off how truly powerful he's become now that he has Sokar's troops. Yet he could've done that from space...why did he attack Earth by hand? Maybe he was looking for something....?
Aha! The Harsesis child! Teal'c and Bra'tac head down to Daniel's office to ask him about the child. Bra'tac asks him if he knows where the child is, but Daniel replies that all he knows is that Ammonet took the child to a place called Kheb. Bra'tac has heard of the place--all Goa'uld and Jaffa have heard of the legend and fear and despise the place. Apparently, a few Jaffa once found it and, ever after, when they could no longer carry a primta (symbiote), they went there. When the Goa'uld learned of the place, they went there to see it for themselves...but they never returned. Because of that, it's forbidden for anyone to go there. Unfortunately, Bra'tac doesn't know the coordinates for Kheb. They keep talking and Daniel tells him that Kheb is where Osiris supposedly once hid from Seth...which is another story Bra'tac has already heard. He says this planet was among the Lak Na Kol, a group of planets depleted of their resources by mining.
So down they go to the control room and look through the coordinates stored in their computer to see if Bra'tac recognizes anything. According to Carter, there are two sets of coordinates in the computer--one in yellow, which came from the cartouche they found on Abydos, and one in red, which came from the Ancients' original map of the Stargates ("The Fifth Race"). Conveniently enough, Bra'tac recognizes the symbols for this group of planets and, by process of elimination, they narrow the search down to the right symbols for Kheb. They discuss this turn of events with Hammond and O'Neill asks that they send reinforcements in case Apophis has already figured out where Kheb is. Bra'tac, also, would like to accompany SG-1 to Kheb since he's always wanted to see the place. Hammond agrees and away they go.
O'Neill tells Major Coburn of SG-2 (who accompanied SG-1 as their backup) to stay by the gate and check in every half hour. SG-1 then takes off for the valley where Bra'tac says Kheb is supposed to be located. Soon after this, however, Bra'tac sees a number of tracks on the ground and tells them that they didn't beat Apophis here--he sees tracks of eight Jaffa on the ground. They follow the tracks.
Next Bra'tac sees place where two of the Jaffa went off in one direction, while six others stayed behind. The two returned with a female, there was a struggle, and they ran off into the woods. O'Neill is impressed by Bra'tac's tracking ability and they follow the prints into the forest. It doesn't take long before Carter and Daniel notice something moving around in the bushes. When Daniel goes to check it out, they're startled by a raven...and find eight dead Jaffa bodies. All of the bodies have been completely burned, and yet nothing in the area around them shows signs of a fire. Huh, maybe lightning struck them? A few paces away, Bra'tac finds the body of a priestess, who had been shot with a staff weapon. Because her arms were unbound, she was presumably carrying the Harsesis baby when she was shot. She probably sensed she was in danger and took off away from the Jaffa, but they shot her and then something killed them. As for where the baby went, nobody knows. SG-1 leaves the dead bodies behind and continues toward Kheb.
Finally, they arrive at the valley where Kheb sits--think a monastery that kinda sorta resembles Shangri-La. Once they enter the gates of the monastery, O'Neill, Daniel, and Bra'tac go inside to see if they can locate the child. Inside they meet a monk who speaks metaphysically and cryptically and refuses to answer their questions directly. He tells them to take off their boots (which is where O'Neill draws the line and refuses to go along with him <g>) and Daniel sits down inside a star on the ground to talk to the guy. The monk tells them that in order to find what they're looking for, they first have to achieve oneness. O...kay. Anyway, to make a long story short, Daniel and Bra'tac stay inside the monastery to talk to the monk while O'Neill gets fed up with the cryptic talk and goes outside.
Bra'tac and the Monk talk for awhile, and the Monk tells him that, in order to really begin his journey of freedom, he must first give up his symbiote. Bra'tac understands this point, but says he's not ready to die yet. However, he's comforted by the fact that that journey still lies ahead of him, then he leaves to let Daniel talk to the monk. Outside, Bra'tac re-emphasizes to Teal'c that he's not ready to give up yet. They still have false gods to slay, and you can tell by the smile on Teal'c's face that he's relieved that Bra'tac won't be giving up on life anytime soon. =) (So I'm a sucker for teacher-student moments like this, so sue me. <g>)
Inside the monastery, the Monk shows Daniel some writings on the walls and tells him to trust in mother nature and he can do just about anything. He then asks why Daniel wants to find the boy? Daniel says the boy is his wife's son and he promised her he'd make sure he was safe. In response, the Monk apparently thinks it's a great idea to try to get Daniel to light a candle with his mind so away they go to the star on the floor to try to light a candle. Daniel says he can't do it, and the Monk presses him further about his reasons for wanting to find the boy. Now Daniel tells him the rest of the story--that the boy contains a whole lot of knowledge that could help them fight the Goa'uld. Not satisfied with this, the Monk tries to get Daniel to light the candle again, and when Daniel can't do it with his mind, the Monk does it for him. Wow! Now, if Daniel would only trust in Mother Nature--Oma Desala--he could do that too.
Outside, under a gorgeous night sky, O'Neill decides he's given Daniel more than enough time to try to get answers from the Monk and goes inside to find out what's going on. Daniel tells him that on the walls are a set of instructions that an alien race left behind for anyone who wants to try to think their way into a different plane of existence. Yeah, that's great, but where's the boy? Daniel then shows him his new tricks--he manages to light the candle with his mind. Wow, he figured it out! Our little archaeologist has mastered the powers of telekinesis! When Jack still doesn't buy it, Daniel removes O'Neill's gun from his hands and lowers it to the ground...with his mind. And guess what? O'Neill, too, could have this power if he'd only believe and learn the ways of Oma Desala.
As they're talking, however, they hear some sort of machine outside and O'Neill leaves to check on what it is. Seems two Goa'uld death gliders have just flown over the planet. Uh-oh, Apophis found the place and is after the boy. He orders Teal'c and Bra'tac to find out where the gliders went, tells Carter to start setting up the Claymores, then heads back inside to hurry Daniel along. Daniel, however, says he's just starting to build the Monk's trust and can't leave yet.
Teal'c and Bra'tac sneak through the forest and find an open glade where a mother ship has landed. There's an awful lot of Jaffa standing by it, ready to attack the monastery and take the child by force.
Back at the monastery, Carter enters and tells O'Neill that the Claymores are set up. Daniel still doesn't want to leave and instead shows off his newfound skills by creating a big flame burst out of the ground. Carter is suspicious of this and says she'd love to do some tests to see if there's some kind of concealed technology allowing him to do this...but she can't because of the not-so-nice circumstances. At this point, Teal'c and Bra'tac come running in and report what they saw--2,000 troops are approaching. O'Neill and Carter follow them out but Daniel stays behind. He turns to talk to the Monk...but the monk is now gone. Instead, he sees a bright light approaching him and stares at it in awe.
Outside, O'Neill sees a whole mess of Jaffa approaching and is not happy about this. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I'm almost certain he utters a line that sounds exactly like... "D'oh." <g>
Back to Daniel and the bright light (or is that James and the Giant Peach...?...never mind. <g>) Anyway, the light takes the form of a fairy-like woman (Oma Desala) who doesn't say anything, but rather moves herself through a wall. Daniel follows and finds he's also able to walk through the wall. On the other side he finds none other than Sha're's baby. Oma Desala allows him to take the boy and he thanks her--the boy will be safe will him. As he's turning to leave with it, though, he suddenly stops as he comes to some big realizations. He had not been responsible for his earlier displays of power; Oma Desala had done it all. That was her way of communicating with humans. Wow, talk about a powerful alien race! I can't help but wonder if they're the Furlings...or maybe the Ancients? Guess we may never know. In any case, Daniel concludes that he should leave the baby with Oma Desala since she will obviously be able to protect the child better than he'd be able to.
Outside, O'Neill and the others have been busy setting up defensive positions to attack the Jaffa, who are just starting to enter the monastery. The monk emerges from the shrine and tells the Jaffa to stop, but the Jaffa leader just tells him to move, then shoots him when he doesn't. Bra'tac and the rest of SG-1, still concealed, prepare to attack the Jaffa, but before they can Daniel rushes out and tells them all to drop their weapons. After pleading with O'Neill to trust him on the matter just this once, they agree and drop their weapons. The Jaffa leader orders his men to kill them all, but when they shoot at SG-1, an invisible barrier protects them from being injured. The sky darkens and lightning strikes all the Jaffa, killing them and blasting the two death gliders. Sweet. Oma Desala has protected them and destroyed an awful lot of the bad guys.
Next we know, the dead monk's body is sinking in on itself and out pops Oma Desala with the Harsesis boy. So that's how she had been able to communicate with them, by taking the form of the monk! Daniel realizes she's leaving with the child and says that he's not surprised--now that Apophis knows what planet the child was on, he'll be back to try to get the boy again. Oma Desala disappears, O'Neill tells SG-2 to ignore the light when they report seeing it, then she goes through the now-open Stargate to a different planet. O'Neill and the others decide to go home.

Quotes:
O'Neill, upon learning that Apophis is still alive and attacked Chu'lac: "Son of a bitch!"
Teal'c: "Apophis must have transported off of Sokar's ship before it exploded."
O'Neill: "Well somebody's got to teach that guy how to die."Bra'tac: "I am an old man, Teal'c. One day I wish to spread Moac's ashes on the grave of Apophis. But I do not know if I have the strength to fight anymore."
Teal'c: "Many have died, old friend. But their deaths must not go in vain. Word of this must spread to all Jaffa."
Bra'tac: "Yes. But maybe it is for someone younger and stronger than I to spread that word."
Teal'c: "You are the strongest Jaffa I have ever known."
Bra'tac: "In my 135 years, I have never seen a Goa'uld turn on those that carry its kind this way. He massacred so many that had worshipped him for so long."
Teal'c: "Perhaps he has done this to show the System Lords how truly powerful he has become."
Bra'tac: "You know well Apophis has weapons that could've been used from space. There had to be some other purpose. His armies swept through Chu'lac as if..."
Teal'c: "...he were searching for something."Teal'c: "Apophis fathered a child with Sha're, the host of his mate, Ammonet. He hoped to create a new host for himself."
Bra'tac: "It is forbidden."
Daniel: "Yes, because the child would contain all the knowledge of the Goa'uld. Ammonet hid the boy to keep him safe."
Bra'tac: "Of course. This boy would be hunted. He would be the undoing of all the Goa'uld."
Daniel: "But Apophis also doesn't know where Ammonet hid him."
Teal'c: "Which is why they were searching Chu'lac."
Bra'tac: "Do you know where this child is?"
Daniel: "Ah, all I know is that it's a place called Kheb."
Teal'c, seeing Bra'tac's expression: "You have heard of such a place."
Bra'tac: "It is an ancient legend. I did not believe it really existed."
Daniel: "It has to."
Bra'tac: "The Goa'uld fear and despise Kheb. They forbade anyone from speaking of it long ago. It is something my father once spoke of to me, an old tale about a place discovered long ago by a few Jaffa and kept secret from the Goa'uld. When they could no longer carry a primta, they would make their journey to Kheb. Then their kalak would make their journey through the darkness into the next life."
Daniel: "Kalak, that means 'soul,' right?"
Teal'c: "Yes."
Bra'tac: "When some of the Goa'uld finally found out about Kheb and make their way there, they did not return. It was forbidden to speak of ever again. My father enjoyed telling me this story. If the Goa'uld are truly all-powerful gods, he would say, how is it that they fear anything?"
Daniel: "Well, it sounds like the perfect place to hide someone you don't want the Goa'uld to find. I don't suppose you happen to know the Stargate address?"
Bra'tac: "No."
Daniel: "Well, all I have is some obscure Earth mythology that indicates Osiris once hid there from Seth."
Bra'tac: "The story told among Jaffa is that Osiris hid among one of the planets of the Lak na kol."
Daniel: "What's that?"
Teal'c: "A group of planets whose resources have been depleted by mining."
Daniel: "I don't suppose you happen to know the address of any of those planets...?"Teal'c: "You have been unusually silent, Master Bra'tac."
Bra'tac: "There is not much time left before I can no longer carry a primta."
Teal'c: "When that time comes, I will have to decide what to do."
Bra'tac: "If this truly is Kheb, that time maybe be upon us both."Carter: "This is really weird. These bodies are burnt to a crisp and yet nothing around them has even been touched. It's almost as if lightning struck them."
O'Neill: "Or some kind of...."
Teal'c: "I have never before seen a weapon that could do such a thing."
O'Neill: "...weapon."O'Neill, passing through the gates of the monastery: "Well, someone's been reading Martha Stewart."
O'Neill: "Hey! Whoa! Where'd you come from?"
Monk: "I have been here for some time."
O'Neill: "No, you weren't here when we just came in."
Monk: "Here is everywhere you are."
O'Neill: "Excuse me?"
Daniel: "Um, hello, I'm Daniel Jackson. This is Jack O'Neill. And this is Bra'tac. We're peaceful explorers from a planet called Earth."
Monk: "Do you seek oneness with the Desala?"
Daniel: "Desala...I know that word. It sounds tribal, African maybe."
Monk: "Desala is everything, everywhere."
Daniel: "Nature. It, ah, means nature."
O'Neill: "Ah."
Monk: "Put no barriers between you and where you are."
O'Neill: "Don't look at me."
Bra'tac: "I believe he wishes us to take off our boots."
O'Neill: "Yeah, look, ah, we've been walking a ways today...."
Monk: "Your journey has just begun."
O'Neill: "I'm just sayin' I think I'm doing us all a great favor by keeping these babies on."
Monk: "When the mind is enlightened, the spirit is freed, the body matters not." He sits down in the star on the ground and Daniel kneels down to take off his boots.
O'Neill: "Here's an idea...why don't we just ask the man if the boy's here?"
Daniel, sitting down in the star by the monk: "We've come looking for a boy. A baby."
Monk: "Lightning flashes, sparks shower. In one blink of your eyes you've missed seeing."
O'Neill: "Lightning, you say."
Monk: "I only know a snowflake cannot exist is a storm of fire."
O'Neill: "What?!"
Daniel: "Jack..."
O'Neill: "No, you know me, I'm a huge fan of subtlety, but that's downright cryptic."
Daniel, to the monk: "Sorry, don't, ah, don't worry about him."
Monk: "The sun is warm, wind is wild, grass is green along the shores. Here no bull can hide."
O'Neill: "Oh, I don't know about that."
Daniel: "Jack, he's speaking in the Zen cones. Whatever theology he follows may be an original basis for Buddhism on Earth."
O'Neill: "Well, that's very nice. I'll be sure to call the Dhali Lama when I get back home. But for now, how 'bout why we came here?"
Daniel: "Um, he's right, this is very important. Is there a child here?"
Monk: "There is a child in all of us."
O'Neill: "Oh, come on."
Bra'tac: "He speaks of a real human boy of flesh and bones."
Monk: "Those who week oneness find all that they seek."
Daniel: "I think this is going to take awhile."
O'Neill: "Really? What gives you that idea?"Teal'c: "What of the Harsesis child, O'Neill?"
O'Neill: "I don't know. There's a monk guy in there. Daniel think he might know something so he's going to play along for awhile."
Carter: "Play along?"
O'Neill: "Oh, somethin' 'bout enlightenment."
Carter: "Sir..."
O'Neill: "I know. I know."Monk: "Within you is a being whose heart knows only darkness."
Bra'tac: "Yes."
Monk: "You must renounce such evil to achieve oneness with the Oma Desala."
Daniel: "Oma...what does, what does that mean?"
Monk: "Words cannot express things, speech cannot convey the spirit. Swayed by words, one is lost. One cannot carry darkness on the great path."
Bra'tac: "If I remove the symbiote within me, I will die."
Monk: "You cannot start the journey with it inside you."
Bra'tac: "So a Jaffa cannot seek oneness before he is willing to die."
Monk: "When the mind is freed, the body is no longer required. I sense that you are not ready to meet Oma Desala."
Bra'tac: "I am not ready to die. But I take solace in the fact that journey is ahead of me." He leaves.
Daniel: "So...I don't, ah, I don't have to die, right?"
Monk: "You do not have the same evil within you."
Daniel: "Good."
Monk: "But you have your own burdens of which to rid yourself."
Daniel: "Okay."Bra'tac: "I am not yet ready to give up. I feel alive, Teal'c. Like a man...of eighty. We still have false gods to slay." Teal'c smiles.
Monk: "She goes into the lake without making a ripple. She goes into the forest without disturbing a blade of grass."
Daniel: "Who is she?"
Monk: "The mother."
Daniel: "Desala. Nature. Mother Nature. We're...we're...we're talking about Mother Nature."
Monk: "Why do you seek this child of flesh and bones?"
Daniel: "He is the son of my wife."
Monk: "But not your son."
Daniel: "No. But my wife is dead now and I promised her I would make sure the boy is safe."
Monk: "And you are sure he will be safe with you."
Daniel: "Yes. Absolutely."
Monk: "Because it is so clear, it takes a longer time to realize it. If you immediately know the candle has fire, then the meal was cooked a long time ago."
Daniel: "Right. Well, I, ah, I have no idea what you're talking about."Monk: "You say you seek this think to fulfill a promise."
Daniel: "Yes."
Monk: "Is there another reason?"
Daniel: "The child has knowledge. He can help my people defend themselves against an evil enemy, the Goa'uld."
Monk: "You hate the Goa'uld."
Daniel: "The Goa'uld are responsible for the death of my wife, among millions and millions of other people. How can I not hate them?"
Monk: "Your hate will lead to the child's death."
Daniel: "How do you know that?"
Monk: "You must trust. You must believe."
Daniel: "Well, maybe what I don't believe is that I can light a candle with my mind. You see, I find it a lot easier to use a lighter or a match. It's much more practical...." The monk lights the candle with his mind. "Wow."
Monk: "Now you blow it out." Daniel bends over and blows it out. "With your mind."
Daniel: "Sorry. Could you...could you light that again?" The monk does. "This isn't, like, a trick candle or anything, is it?"
Monk: "Put your hand in the fire."
Daniel: "What?"
Monk: "Place your hand in the flame."
Daniel, after doing what the monk asked him to do and his hand is burned: "Ow! Why did you tell me to do that?"
Monk: "Why did you do it?"
Daniel: "Because you told me to."
Monk: "Because you trusted."
Daniel: "Yes."
Monk: "Within you is the capacity for trust. Trust Oma Desala. Do not believe you can light the candle, believe she can light the candle."Daniel, talking really, really fast: "Jack. The markings on the wall are a language. It's a Bible. Ah, no, actually it's more of an instruction book on how to reach this ethereal plane of existence, some kind of other world. It's only natural the Jaffa who found this place would've interpreted it as a passage to the after life."
O'Neill: "Whoa, slow down there, Grasshopper."
Daniel: "Okay, I'm pretty sure this place was built by an alien race millennia ago. They may have visited Earth and as far as the mythologies are the concept of Mother Nature in various cultures."
O'Neill: "So this guy is an alien?"
Daniel: "No. Um, I'm pretty sure the aliens discovered the means by which they could ascend to some higher plane of existence and went there, ah, wherever 'there' is. But they left the writings in the shrine as a kind of map for others who wanted to follow them. The monk has just sort of taken up some kind of curatorship."
O'Neill: "Kind of a janitor?"
Daniel: "More of a guide."
O'Neill: "An usher."
Daniel: "It doesn't matter. Just...watch." He sits down inside the star and lights the candle...with his mind.
O'Neill: "Am I supposed to believe you did that?"
Daniel: "Yes."
O'Neill: "Daniel? A word?" Daniel comes back out of the star. "We didn't come here to learn parlor tricks."
Daniel: "Jack...."
O'Neill: "Is the boy here or not?"
Daniel: "I think so...."
O'Neill: "Because every minute we stay here, we're risking our necks."
Daniel: "I know that...."
O'Neill: "So please understand I'm on the verge of ordering a complete search of this place, with or without his cooperation."
Daniel: "You can't do that...."
O'Neill: "You're confused, Daniel, I can. So far I haven't."
Daniel: "I am gaining his trust...."
O'Neill: "And how long is something like that going to take?"
Daniel: "Jack, you don't understand...."
O'Neill: "I think I do." Suddenly, his gun lifts out of his hands by an invisible force. "Alright, that's dangerous, put it down." It's lowered to the ground. "Okay, that was a little more impressive." He turns to the monk. "How did you do that?"
Daniel: "Actually, I did that."
O'Neill: "What?"
Daniel: "That's what I've been trying to tell you. This is...it's incredible."
O'Neill: "He taught you how....?"
Daniel: "How to do things with my mind. You could do it too."
O'Neill: "He could teach me how to light candles and move stuff around by thinking?"
Monk: "I cannot teach you what you already know."
O'Neill: "Oh, I don't think I know as much as you think I know."
Monk: "You must come to know Oma Desala. Become her friend."O'Neill: "So is the kid here or not?"
Daniel: "Jack...."
O'Neill: "Daniel, that was a glider. We're out of time."
Monk: "Time means nothing to the...."
O'Neill: "Ah! Ah! Don't say it."O'Neill: "Daniel thinks we should stay."
Carter: "Why?"
O'Neill: "Well, watch."
Carter: "What?" Daniel stands in the star and makes a huge flame appear from the ground. "You did that?"
Daniel: "Yes."
Carter: "That's impossible."
O'Neill: "You'd think."
Daniel: "Why?"
Carter: "You learned the power to control fire."
Daniel: "It's not just fire. All the instructions are here, on the walls. All you have to do is be willing to learn...and believe."
Carter: "I'm sorry, but something else has to be going on here."
Daniel: "Why?"
Carter: "We...I don't know, but under different circumstances I would bring in the right equipment and check for some kind of concealed technology before I assumed that."
Daniel: "Isn't there the smallest part of you that wants to believe a person can reach a higher level?"
Carter: "Yes, of course, but...."
Daniel: "Don't you see what's happening here? I have that power."
Carter: "To do what?'
Daniel: "To protect the child. I think she doesn't want me to leave until she knows I understand how to protect him."O'Neill: "If we happen to make it out of this in one piece, remind me to harm Daniel severely."
Daniel, to the alien woman: "Thank you. He'll be safe with me." He turns to leave, then stops. "I didn't do any of it, did I? It was you. I was wrong, I don't...I don't have any powers at all. You do. You were showing them to me. That's how you communicate with us. You were trying to tell me the boy is better off here with you and I...I wasn't listening. I made a promise." He places the boy back on the bed. "I promised he would be safe."
Daniel: "Drop your weapons!"
O'Neill: "You heard him!"
Daniel: "I was talking to you, Jack."
O'Neill: "Wh...what?"
Daniel: "Do it now, all of you."
O'Neill: "Daniel...."
Daniel: "Jack, I was wrong, I was very wrong. One of those aliens I thought was long gone is still here."
Carter: "Sir, we put our guns down and we're dead."
Jaffa Commander: "You are outnumbered and surrounded. You will die if you do not."
Daniel: "Jack, if you're ever going to trust me on anything, now is the time. The alien's the one with all the powers and she's not someone you want to fool with if you catch my drift."Daniel, to all the Jaffa: "Bye."
O'Neill: "Well, that was cool. Wow."
O'Neill: "You alright?"
Daniel: "Yeah."
O'Neill: "Let's go home." They start to leave. "Daniel?"
Daniel: "Yeah?"
O'Neill: "Shoes."
