Synopsis: We open in the gate room where the Stargate is dialing in. The technician announces that they're receiving the Tok'ra's iris code and they open the iris. In steps Martouf with two other Tok'ra. Carter and O'Neill head down to greet them, but Martouf gives them some bad news. Jacob Carter/Selmak have been captured by Sokar and taken to Sokar's replica of Hell, a fiery, icky world from which no one has ever escaped. Oh dear, this doesn't look very good.

Martouf explains that Sokar's "Hell" is actually a very hot moon called Naetu that orbits around Sokar's home planet. He then assures Carter that Sokar prefers to keep his prisoners alive to torture them and it's very likely that her father is still alive. Hammond agrees to send a rescue mission to save him, and Martouf re-emphasizes that no one has escaped from Naetu. No one, that is, except Jolinar.

Off we go to the debriefing room where Martouf, SG-1, and General Hammond are discussing this new situation. Daniel says that Martouf's description of Naetu matches a description found in the Egyptian Book of Otonic (???), a how-to book on passing through the other worlds. Unfortunately, no one asked Jolinar how she escaped from Naetu, she didn't tell, and Carter has never experienced flashbacks to Naetu. Making the already bad situation even worse, the Tok'ra have reason to believe Sokar is gathering his forces to launch an attack on the Goa'uld system lords. If he wins, he could very well gain control over the whole galaxy. Martouf, however, assures them that the Tok'ra possess the technology to help Carter find her memories (remember those little devices the Tok'ra operative stuck in SG-1's heads in "Out of Mind"?) All this makes it rather difficult to plan an effective rescue operation but in the end Hammond agrees to send SG-1 to find Jacob and bring him back alive.

We cut to the gate room where Martouf announces that they'll be going to the Tok'ra world called Borash where they'll jump onto a Teltak (a cargo ship like the one we saw way too much of in "Dead Man's Switch"). Apparently, Naetu does not have a Stargate and, therefore, SG-1 will have to travel by ship to reach the moon. O'Neill isn't real happy about this "surprise," but away they go anyway. This particular Teltak ship is the one the Tok'ra found Jolinar floating in after she had escaped from Naetu. It doesn't have the stealth capabilities of the one in "Dead Man's Switch" but it'll suffice. Once they arrive at Naetu, four of them (Carter, Martouf, O'Neill and Daniel) will descend to the surface of the moon through individual descent pods. Teal'c takes over as pilot of the ship and away they go to Naetu.

Naetu, Martouf says, was once an industrialized colony of the planet Delmak. When Sokar conquered Delmak and made it his home planet, he transformed Naetu to the horrible place it is today. He filled the atmosphere with toxins and released the molten lava through holes in the surface. This is not a nice place.

During the voyage, Martouf sticks the mind device in Carter's head and she begins having flashbacks. The first one is of herself as a teenager (I'd guess about 15 or 16), baking cookies. Her father comes into the house with tears in his eyes. Sam asks him what's wrong...and where's mom? I think it's safe to assume that her mother is dead. Carter cuts off that memory, then thinks of Jolinar. We see Jolinar and Martouf standing in front of a setting sun, kissing, right before Jolinar's about to leave for the last time. Then the vision fades and Carter says it's gone.

Later that night, everyone is resting on the ship. Carter gets up and tells Martouf that she wants to try the memory device again. Martouf agrees and turns the device on, but also insists that Carter be honest with him. He believes Jolinar purposely kept information from him about what happened on Naetu because she was afraid it would damage their relationship; Carter shouldn't do that to protect him. This time Carter has a flashback to Jolinar being tortured by a really ugly man with that horrible shocking weapon we saw Apophis use on Hammond in "Point of View"'s alternate reality. Carter, however, actually feels the torture and screams for Martouf to turn it off, which O'Neill (who's awake by this point) seconds. Once she's recovered, Martouf turns it on again at a lower setting. Unfortunately, she can't remember anything else and apologizes to him. Martouf says she must remember, and O'Neill calls him out to a nearby hallway to tell him to lighten up. Carter knows her father's life is at risk and she's doing the best she can. The problem is, Martouf replies, if Carter can't remember how Jolinar escaped from Naetu, he can't allow the others to come with him to find Jacob. O'Neill disagrees; whether Carter remembers or not, they're going to Hell.

Meanwhile, Daniel asks Carter how she's holding up; she says that she's confused. All she's getting are scattered images and faces...and she's afraid something terrible happened between Jolinar and the ugly guy who was torturing her in the last flashback. Something she never wanted Martouf to find out about.

So finally we arrive at Naetu. O'Neill doesn't like the descent pods or the fact that Teal'c's not coming with them (although they'll be able to communicate with him using a hand-held device), but he doesn't have a choice and they all step into their pods. Teal'c launches them toward the moon and soon enough their pods are touching down on a dry, dusty, brownish-reddish planet that looks kinda like Mars. After O'Neill locates the others, Carter leads them toward a cave where the people are supposed to be. They sneak in and, after a joke by O'Neill about how Hell certainly isn't the Emerald City, they find themselves confronted by a group of rather unfriendly-looking faces. Carter has another flashback to Jolinar making love with the ugly guy, then remembers his name (Binar) and demands to speak with him.

Binar's First Prime, a masked guy named Nayo'nak, asks who they are and, when they don't answer, tells them to kneel before him. He decides to banish them tot he surface and O'Neill pulls a gun...oops, weapons are forbidden on Naetu except a hand device for Binar and a staff weapon for Nayo'nak. Binar suddenly appears and blasts O'Neill with his hand device, then asks who's seeking him by name. Carter replies that she is--she's host to Jolinar. Binar is curious at her statement, but instead of questioning her right there he orders their weapons to be taken from them, then toss them in the Pit. <Was it just me or did anyone suddenly think SG-1 was going to be taken to Florin and tossed in the Pit of Despair to be tortured by The Machine? Then we could have Miracle Max show up and feed them chocolate-covered pills...inconceivable! =) >

So SG-1 and Martouf are taken to the Pit and dumped inside. They talk a bit, then they hear a man calling Sam's name...it's Jacob! However, he is seriously injured, Selmak is dying, and if they don't get him out of there soon, he will die. Oh dear.

Back in the Teltak (cargo ship), Teal'c sees a beam of light go from Naetu to Sokar's planet, Delmak. We pan to that world, where Sokar sits, running his fingers over the flame of a candle and overall just looking threatening. Binar thanks him for sending Jolinar so he could take his revenge on her. Sokar asks what he speaks of, Binar says he's talking about the four people who were sent to Naetu, one of whom was Jolinar's host.... You fool! Sokar never sent Jolinar's host to Naetu. Oops. He sends Binar back to Naetu to find out what they want and then kill them. After Binar takes his leave, Sokar tells one of his guards that the three intruders had to have come by ship...find the ship and destroy it.

Let's head back to the Pit, shall we? Jacob reveals that the Tok'ra were mistaken about the size of Sokar's army to attack the System lords. It's actually ten times larger than they'd thought...more than enough to win. With that huge army, he'll be able to control the galaxy. The attack was to take place two weeks from the time Jacob was captured, which happened four days ago. O'Neill and Martouf contact Teal'c with the transmitter to report the news, but before they can relay the whole message, Nayo'nak enters the Pit and tells Carter to come with him to talk to Binar. O'Neill reluctantly agrees to let her go and see if she can get some information from him about how to escape.

Nayo'nak takes her straight to Binar. He offers her a glass of a clear liquid to drink, but she refuses. How is it possible that she once carried Jolinar if she currently does not have a symbiote? She tells him and he says he should've figured; Jolinar would've died on the surface rather than daring to come down to Hell again. However, he still wants his revenge on her--Sokar took his left eye as punishment for allowing Jolinar to escape. Now, why did Carter and her friends come?

We cut back to the Pit where Jacob wakes up, calling for Sam. He's not happy to hear she went away to talk to Binar since he's Sokar's eyes and ears.

Back we go to Binar's quarters, where he's suggesting that Carter came to rescue the Tok'ra Selmak. Carter says she wanted to talk to him (Binar) because she thought he'd helped Jolinar to escape the first time--after all, he loved her. He says that she's mistaken. As she's looking at a pendant around his neck, however, she has another flashback to Jolinar stealing the pendant from him, sticking it in a hole, then escaping through transport rings located in his quarters. The flashback ends and Binar says he's not going to get as much satisfaction from killing Carter as he would've from torturing Jolinar, but he'll do it anyway. He lifts his ribbon device, but before he can fire at her, he suddenly crumples to the ground, shot from behind by his First Prime, Nayo'nak.

Nayo'nak sends Carter back to the Pit and she and SG-1 discuss this turn of events. She reports that there're transport rings inside Binar's quarters, as there are on the Teltak. Martouf explains that the transport rings work like mini-Stargates, transmitting matter streams. If Teal'c can maneuver the ship into place above the transport rings, they can theoretically gate out of there! There's hope!

So Daniel stands in clear view of the door to the prison and calls Teal'c with the communicator. The guards wonder what he's doing, he says he's talking to his friend. They come into the cell and are jumped by Martouf, O'Neill, and Carter, then they head toward Binar's quarters with Jacob. On the way Daniel gives Teal'c instructions about the ship and the transport rings. Teal'c assures them he'll have the ship in place.

Once in Binar's quarters, Carter goes to look for the key but it's missing. Martouf begins working on the keyhole to get the transport rings to operate manually. While he's working, however, Sokar's ships attack Teal'c's Telnak...uh oh. Martouf almost finishes what he's doing and tells the others to get ready to go...but right before he succeeds in operating it, Nayo'nak breaks the door down and stops them. His guard tells them to kneel before Nayo'nak and his other guards force them to do so. It is now time, Nayo'nak announces, that he will be able to reclaim his real name...Apophis.

Quotes:
O'Neill
: "Open the iris. Maybe it's Dad."
Carter: "Maybe."

Carter: "Martouf. How are you?"
Martouf: "Samantha, Colonel O'Neill. Well enough, under the circumstances."
Carter: "What's wrong?"
Martouf: "Maybe we should discuss this elsewhere."
Carter: "It's my father."
Martouf: "I'm afraid he's been captured by Sokar."
Carter: "My god."
Martouf: "As far as we know he's still alive."
Carter: "As far as you know?"
Martouf: "You are familiar with the way Sokar has assumed the persona of the entity known as the Devil?"
O'Neill: "Yeah. A bit pretentious, don't you think?"
Martouf: "You must understand when I say that if Selmak is still alive, he has been sent to Hell."
O'Neill: "As in...?"
Martouf: "As in a place of eternal suffering and damnation from which there is no return."

Martouf: "Unfortunately, no one to our knowledge has ever escaped from Naetu."
O'Neill: "Oh."
Martouf: "No one except Jolinar."
Carter: "Oh."

O'Neill: "How did Jolinar get out?"
Martouf: "She never said."
Daniel: "And no one ever asked her how she escaped from an inescapable prison?"

O'Neill: "Well, if we're going in on this one, Sir, we're going to need a couple more units."
Hammond: "He's really that much worse than the others?"
Daniel: "Well, of all the gods he picked to impersonate, he chose the Devil."

Martouf: "Without wanting to sound overly dramatic, the fate of the galaxy may be at stake."
O'Neill: "Sounds a bit overly dramatic."
Hammond: "Sounds like we can't refuse."

Carter: "When do we leave?"
Martouf: "As soon as we're ready...if you are all sure you understand what you're volunteering for."
Daniel: "You said hell, right?"
O'Neill: "Well, I'm going to end up there sooner or later, might as well check out the neighborhood."

Martouf: "The Teltak we will require for the journey awaits us on the planet Borash."
O'Neill: "Ship?"
Martouf: "There is no Stargate on Naetu. Thos banished there are taken by ship."
O'Neill: "Have I mentioned to you that I hate surprises?"
Martouf: "We have a long journey ahead of us. There will be much time to inform you of the details...."
O'Neill, holding up a finger: "Ah! Now, see, that puts me in a position to be surprised."

Teal'c: "Is this vessel equipped with stealth capabilities?"
Carter: "The ship we were in could make itself invisible."
Martouf: "Really?"
O'Neill: "It was an upgrade. You're obviously dealing with a base model here."

Martouf: "The atmosphere around the moon is impenetrable by ship. The only way to reach the surface is the descent pods. It is how all the denizens are sent by Sokar and it is how we must also arrive if we are to convince the denizens we can be trusted."
Carter: "And there are only four pods."
Martouf: "Correct."
O'Neill: "This counts as a surprise, you know."
Martouf: "Shall we embark?"
O'Neill: "By all means. To hell with us."

Carter, about her vision: "It's gone. I lost it."
Martouf: "We will arrive soon."
Carter: "I know, Martouf. I'm sorry. Maybe I'm not going to be able to do this."
Martouf: "You have to."
O'Neill: "Hey, Marty. A word?" They go to a different section of the ship. "You're pushing a little hard, don't you think?"
Martouf: "There is not much time left."
O'Neill: "It's her father. She knows the stakes."
Martouf: "If she does not remember Jolinar's method of escape, I will not ask any of you to accompany me to the surface."
O'Neill: "Why?"
Martouf: "Because anyone who goes down there will likely not return."
O'Neill: "But you're going to go."
Martouf: "I will attempt to locate Selmak and communicate any relevant information to you. You will then return to Borash and relate to the Tok'ra."
O'Neill: "And leave you and Jacob down there to what, rot?"
Martouf: "With no means to escape...."
O'Neill: "Alright, first of all, Carter's not going to let you go without her. Secondly, I won't let it happen. Thirdly, Jolinar escaped."
Martouf: "But if Samantha cannot recall how...."
O'Neill: "I know, I heard you. And forgive the bravado, but it's been done before. It can be done again."

Daniel: "You going to be okay?"
Carter: "Yeah. It's just so confusing. Images and faces, fragments of thoughts and feelings.... There was a Goa'uld on Naetu, not Sokar. He was, um, he was less than attractive. I know his name...I can't find it. I get this horrible, sick feeling when I remember him."
Daniel: "Something happened between him and Jolinar."
Carter: "Something worse than the torture and pain. Something Jolinar never wanted Martouf to find out about."

Daniel: "That's, ah, that's still a long way down."
Martouf: "The pods are launched at a great velocity."
Daniel: "And that's supposed to make me feel better...?"
Martouf: "They are equipped with heat dampening and anti-gravity wave generators that will slow our descent."
O'Neill: "So smooth sailing all the way, right?"
Teal'c: "Not exactly, O'Neill." O'Neill steps into the rather small interior of the pod. "Are you prepared?"
O'Neill: "Ah, no. Not really."

Daniel: "My lungs are burning."
O'Neill: "Well, at least it's a dry heat."

Daniel: "Is it me or is it actually getting hotter in here?"
O'Neill: "Ah, a little of both, probably."

O'Neill, seeing the colony in Hell: "Well, certainly not Emerald City."

O'Neill, to the denizens: "Howdy, folks. We're, uh, new in these parts. I know that's hard to tell but it's true."

Nayo'nak: "Who are you?"
O'Neill: "People of little consequence. Pay no attention to us."

O'Neill, after being tossed in the Pit: "Thank you! Mmm...smells keep getting better and better, don't they?"

Daniel, after the guard hits the bars with his staff: "This doesn't look encouraging."

Daniel: "I thought Sokar wouldn't allow any weapons. So far we've seen a staff weapon and a hand device."
Martouf: "I do not understand it myself."
O'Neill: "Surprise, surprise."

Jacob: "Are you crazy?"
O'Neill: "Ah, apparently."

Nayo'nak: "Samantha Carter. You will come with me."
O'Neill: "Who's calling?"
Nayo'nak: "You will come with me."
O'Neill: "Come and get her yourself, you...."
Carter: "Sir! This may be our only way out of here."
O'Neill: "How do you figure?"
Carter: "If I can just get close to Binar, talk to him...."
Nayo'nak: "Move!"
O'Neill, reluctantly: "Yeah, okay. Go ahead."
Carter: "Look after my dad."

Jacob: "Sam?"
Daniel: "She'll be back."
Jacob: "Where is she?"
Daniel: "With Binar."
Jacob: "Oh, no."
Martouf: "Samantha believes Binar is the key to our escape."
Jacob: "No, he's Sokar eyes and ears."
O'Neill: "Well, eye and ears."
Jacob: "He ensures there are no uprisings."
O'Neill: "Keeps the conditions livable."
Jacob: "And he reports to Sokar regularly. Sokar enjoys hearing about the suffering."

O'Neill: "Can you make it work?"
Martouf: "It will take time."
O'Neill, as the guards start pounding on the door with a battering ram: "Take all you need."
