Good reading
Monday morning at the SGC…
Major Samantha Carter arrived at the Briefing room,
ready for a meeting that was about to start. As she
opened the door, she was surprised by the
transformation inside. There was a beautiful
Christmas tree in a corner accompanied by a nice pine
crown encircling the SGC logo and various other
Christmas decorations. Sam thought it was a nice
change.
She took a seat and said good morning to Jack, Daniel
and Janet, who were already there. Teal'c, however,
was not. He was off world for a short visit to his
family, and would be returning the following day.
General Hammond arrived in the room.
"All right people, let’s get started,” He said,
officially opening the Briefing.
Janet updated them on the different situations at the
infirmary. While Sam listened to her friend, she got
the distinct feeling that Janet was tired. It was
normal, since the doctor had been taking care of her
sick teenaged girl for a week, and on top of that, her
normal duties on the base. One could very well
imagine that wasn’t an easy task.
Sam realized that she was tired herself. After all,
this had affected her as well because she was like an
aunt for Cassandra.
Sam wasn’t quite listening the debriefing anymore, and
her mind started wandering. She started to think
about the events of the past week.
It had all started a week ago, when Cassie fell sick.
SG-1 had found out that her illness was a result of
experiments that the Goa’uld Nirrti had performed on
her. The whole base had been on high alert when they
discovered that Nirrti was on the base. Finally, Janet
had to take some very desperate measures in order to
save her daughter. In the end, Cassie was fine, and
had been recovering from her illness for a week.
As she was thinking about all this, Sam took a look at
Janet. The doctor was sitting on the chair next to
Daniel. It was not the first time it had happened,
but Sam was surprised by something.
There seemed to be something particular, something
very subtle between them.
Sam noticed first Janet looking at Daniel. It was
very brief, but it had called Sam’s attention. It was
just a short glance, and Janet had looked elsewhere.
Next it was Daniel who took a brief look at Janet
after which, he too looked elsewhere. However, it all
appeared to be an unconscious action on their part.
Sam wondered why she had not noticed it before…well…
to think about it… Janet and Daniel did seem somehow
closer since the events with Cassie and Nirrti…but
there was something about them now that didn’t seem to
be there before.
An idea started to grow in her mind… God, she would
get in trouble for trying that, but she couldn’t
refuse a challenge.
“Thanks everyone,” said General Hammond, ending the
meeting. “Take the rest of the day off and don’t
forget the SGC Christmas party tomorrow night.
Dismissed.”
The General stood up and left the Briefing Room. The
team prepared to leave, and that’s when Sam spoke.
“I have a proposition to make, if that’s okay,” she
said.
“And what would that be?” asked Jack, curious.
”I was thinking that since we have the evening off, we
could ALL meet and do something fun together. Just as
friends.”
The others looked strangely at her as if she had
suddenly changed into something else before their
eyes. It was not like Sam to propose something like
that, since fun for her meant staying in her lab
during her free time.
“Something fun?” said Daniel, still surprised.
“Yeah, like going to the movies” suggested Sam.
“You sure you’re feeling fine, Carter?” Jack teased
her.
“I am fine, sir. It is just an idea I had, but forget
it. Seems like a bad idea now.”
”No! It's a GREAT idea” encouraged Jack.
“Yeah, it is,” said Daniel.
“Sure, let’s do that,” said Janet.
”So, what are we going to watch?” asked Daniel.
”And when?” asked Janet.
”Why don’t we meet, say in two hours, in front of the
movie theater? We can choose then.”
”Good idea,” Janet said with a smile.
“Okay, all set. See you then, campers,” said Jack, as
he left the Briefing Room.
”See you in two hours” said Daniel and Janet almost at
the same time.
”Yes,” said Sam as her friends left the room.
Moments later, Sam rushed to talk to Jack. She looked
around her to make sure that Janet and Daniel didn’t
see her.
”Sir!”
Jack heard her, and stopped walking.
“Something’s wrong, Carter?” he asked, concerned.
“There is something I have to tell you, Sir.”
”And what’s that?”
”We’re not going to the movies,” said Sam.
”What!!” Jack exclaimed.
“It is an idea I had. I suppose that you didn’t
notice anything about Daniel and Janet?”
Jack understood what she was coming from, but decided
to play as if he didn’t.
“Something between them?”
”I think they need a bit of help, Sir.”
”Help with what?” asked the Colonel.
”To realize that they could be in love.”
Sam explained her plan to him. She wanted to play
matchmaker, with Jack’s help. Daniel and Janet would
go to the movies, but they would be alone. Maybe
that was the little something that Daniel and Janet
needed to realize that they were meant for each other.
After hearing Sam’s plan, Jack accepted to help her.
He agreed that Daniel and Janet should be together.
About two hours later, Daniel arrived at the movie
theater. The street was busy with people rushing to
buy Christmas presents. Daniel was uneasy because of
the crowd. He took a look around but didn’t see his
friends.
For a moment, Daniel thought that he was at the wrong
place.
”Great, now what?” he asked himself.
Then, he noticed Janet coming towards him, making her
way through the crowd.
”Daniel! I was afraid I would be late.”
”No, it seems like the others aren’t here yet.”
”What’s there to watch at the movies?” asked Janet,
curious.
”There is only one movie starting in 10 minutes. The
others start two hours from now.”
”Moulin Rouge,” said Janet as she read the movie
theater schedule.
“Guess that’s the movie we’re watching.”
”Do you know if it is good?” asked Janet.
”I’ve no idea.”
Seven minutes later, Daniel and Janet were getting
really nervous. Sam and Jack had not yet arrived.
“Where are they?” asked Janet for the thousandth time.
She checked one more time the crowd around her. They
would be late for the movie if Sam and Jack didn’t
come soon.
“I’ll buy two tickets. They’ll meet us inside when
they arrive” proposed Daniel.
“Okay.”
Three minutes later, Daniel and Janet entered the
movie theater.
The previews for upcoming movies were just starting
when they entered. Daniel and Janet took their seats.
A few minutes later, the room darkened and the movie
began to play.
Later during the movie, Janet realized that she was
crying softly. She was truly moved by Satine and
Christian’s love story. Christian was saying all that
Janet hoped a man would tell her someday. She took a
look at Daniel, and she noticed that Daniel was moved
as well by the movie.
When the movie ended, Janet and Daniel got up and
left. Janet had carefully wiped her eyes so that
nobody could see that she had been crying.
”I am SO angry at them!” she exclaimed a moment later,
as she thought about Sam and Jack.
Before the movie had started, Janet had wanted to
believe that Sam and Jack had a good reason to miss
the movie. But now, everything pointed towards a set
up.
“I just hope that they didn’t show up because
something came up at the SGC,” said Daniel, worried
about that possibility.
“I bet NOTHING wrong happened. Don’t you see it,
Daniel? They tried to set us up together.”
“I don’t…” Daniel interrupted himself when he realized
that it was probably true.
“So, what do we do?” he asked.
”Let’s take revenge!” exclaimed Janet. “We can show
them we can play this game!”
“What do you propose?”
“I don’t know, Daniel. But we do have to take
revenge.”
They were silent for a moment.
“Janet, I don’t know if this is a bad idea, but… I
think I know how we can do that,” said Daniel
carefully.
”How?”
“We make them think it worked… just to show Sam and
Jack that it is THEM who should be together.”
Janet’s surprise was visible on her face. She never
thought Daniel would suggest something like that. But
on second thoughts, it may work.
Daniel and Janet planned what seemed the perfect
revenge and it would start as soon as possible.
Early the next day, Daniel and Janet were at the SGC
cafeteria. Normally, Daniel would have breakfast with
Sam and Jack, usually at this time everyday.
But today was different. He was having breakfast with
Janet. Their intention was to surprise Sam and Jack
with this change, and make them believe that something
was going on between them.
Daniel and Janet were talking as they were having
breakfast.
“So, what’s your most memorable trip with SG-1,” asked
Janet.
”Oh, well, it is hard to choose. But one that comes to
mind is the travel to 1969,” said Daniel.
”I've heard about it, but I don't know the details,”
said Janet. She was curious to hear the story.
Daniel started telling her about the trip, noticing
that Janet was a very attentive listener.
”It was in that cell when we realized that we were in
1969,” said Daniel. “Sam convinced us that we should
keep this secret, to prevent changing the future.”
”Yeah, the grandfather paradox,” commented Janet.
”Right… Then a guard came. He asked me in Russian if
we were Soviet spies. And, I naively answered
‘Niet.’”
”No way!” said Janet, hardly believing her ears.
Daniel was amazed. He had been a bit worried about
telling this part of the story to Janet. He didn’t
know if she would make fun of him. But she didn’t do
that, and Daniel was happy for that.
”I know! Even today, I can’t believe I did something
like that.”
”And then what happened?” asked Janet.
Daniel continued telling her about the trip to 1969.
He told her how General Hammond and Cassandra had
played an important role in getting SG-1 back to their
time.
”So, that’s what happened,” he concluded.
”Great story,” said Janet smiling. “So, Sam and Jack
should be coming soon?” asked Janet to Daniel.
”Yes,” answered Daniel, looking at his watch.
Daniel and Janet carefully waited for their friends’
arrival. As soon as the Major and the Colonel came
through the door, they both stood up, acting as if
they were too engrossed with each other to notice Sam
and Jack.
Then, hand in hand, Daniel and Janet moved towards an
opposite door to the one Sam and Jack had entered.
They left the cafeteria, leaving their surprised
friends behind.
“Look at that,” commented Jack.
”Yeah, seems like it worked,” said Sam. Her face
showed that she was surprised by the apparent success
of her plan.
As soon as they closed the door, Janet and Daniel
shared a good laugh at the joke they had played on Sam
and Jack.
”Sweet revenge” said Janet, with a big smile on her
face.
”Yes, they are now wondering what is going on,” said
Daniel. He also had a big smile on his face.
”But it isn’t over yet,” said Janet.
”Not at all,” agreed Daniel.
The rest of the day, Daniel and Janet were as evasive
as possible. Janet had to check on some wounded
members of the SGC that had been transferred to an Air
Force hospital.
So, she was outside the SGC for a good part of the
day.
As for Daniel, he was debriefing SG-14. Therefore,
Jack could not disturb Daniel, even if he was DYING to
know what was going on between the archeologist and
the doctor.
Then, it was time for lunch. Jack went to Daniel’s
office and knocked on the door, but there was no
answer. He opened the door, took a quick look inside,
but nobody was there. He didn’t enter the office.
Then, Jack went to the infirmary but Janet didn’t seem
to be there either.
“Carter!” said Jack as he saw Sam coming towards him.
“I don’t suppose you know where Daniel and Janet are?”
Sam got curious, but she didn’t want to show it.
“No. I haven’t seen them all day, sir. Well, that is
since this morning.”
“They don’t seem to be on the base.”
”I am sure they’re fine,” said Carter, trying to hide
that she really wanted to know where Daniel and Janet
were.
“Yeah,” said Jack. He knew that if Daniel and Janet
were together, then they would indeed be fine.
”I guess we’ll see them later today. Probably at the
SGC Christmas party,” said Sam.
“Okay. See you, Carter.”
”All right, sir.”
Sam could not help herself. Trying to act as normal as
possible, she walked into the infirmary. There was no
sign of Janet, just as Jack had told her. Sam knocked
on Janet’s door, but nobody answered. So, she opened
the door.
The office was dark. Sam turned on the light. Then,
she noticed a dozen beautiful roses in a vase on
Janet’s desk. Sam moved closer to the roses. Then,
she noticed a card on the desk. Curiosity got the
better of her, and she read it.
”To Janet,
thanks for the wonderful evening we had together.
Daniel.”
Quickly, Sam put the card back on the desk and left
Janet’s office. Sam didn’t know that she had just
fallen into Daniel and Janet’s trap.
As for Jack, he was about to fall into trap set for
him. It was actually a trap very similar to the one
Janet and Daniel had placed for Sam.
Jack knocked on the door of Daniel’s office, just as
he had done previously. Nobody answered, just as Jack
had expected. He entered the office this time. It
was full of archaeological stuff. There was
apparently nothing different, but Jack DID notice
something. Daniel’s computer was on. That was
strange…Daniel did leave the computer on if he was
going to be absent only for a short moment, but he
never left it on otherwise. And he had been absent a
long time today, so the computer should be off.
Curious, Jack pressed on a key. The Egyptian screen
saver disappeared and then it returned to the usual
screen. It was showing Daniel’s e-mail account. He
had received a message that he had already opened.
”Daniel, I received the red roses you sent me. They
are wonderful!
Thanks.
Janet.”
There was a knock on the door. It was Sam. She
couldn’t but notice that Jack had this weird look on
his face.
“Is something wrong, Sir?”
“Looks like your plan IS working, Carter” answered
Jack.
”What do you mean?”
”Dannyboy sent roses to the Doc.”
”Red roses, I know.”
”You know?” Jack wondered how Sam could know that.
“I… I went to Janet’s office and saw them,” Sam
hesitantly said.
“Well, this is not really the place to discuss it,
isn’t” said Jack.
Sam agreed, and they left Daniel’s office.
Daniel and Janet were nowhere to be found on the SGC
for a good reason. They were downtown taking lunch
together at a small restaurant.
”Hmm this is SO good,” said Janet as she took a bite
of chocolate cake.
”No, THIS is good,” said Daniel. He was having a big
spoon of vanilla ice cream.
Janet smiled at seeing Daniel enjoying so much the ice
cream.
“I never knew you liked vanilla ice cream so much,”
commented Janet.
”Yes, I love it,” said Daniel with a boyish smile as
he wiped a bit of ice cream left on his lips. “ So,
tell me, did you like the movie yesterday.”
”Are you kidding? I loved it!” answered Janet.
”What did you like about it?”
”Ewan. He is just a cutie,” answered Janet teasing a
bit as she took another bite of her cake.
“So, he is your kind of guy?” continued Daniel.
“I was kidding, Daniel,” she answered with a smile.
“He is cute, but what I really enjoyed was Satine and
Christian’s love story.”
“Yes, it was a nice story.”
”I loved all what he told her. How wonderful life is,
now you’re in the world.”
It was something that Christian had said in the movie
Moulin Rouge, but Janet blushed at noticing how what
she had just said could be interpreted. She had let
herself go after having such a good time with Daniel!
’Get a grip, girl,’ she thought.
“I think it is time to go back to the base. Surely
they are all wondering what’s going on,” she said,
trying to sound as normal as possible.
”Sure.”
BACK AT THE SGC…
Sam and Jack were walking through the SGC hallways.
They were some distance from the elevator when they
saw Daniel and Janet coming out. They had just
arrived from lunch. Daniel had an arm around Janet,
and she had also an arm around Daniel.
”Do you know how hard is to find a Christmas present
for a teenager? It’s just crazy,” commented Janet.
”I’m sure we’ll find something for Cassie at the
shopping center,” said Daniel encouragingly.
”We have to,” replied Janet.
They both had huge smiles on their faces as they
walked away. They once again pretended not to notice
their friends, just as two birds in love.
“Now, this is TOO much,” said Jack, hardly believing
what was going on.
Sam nodded, not knowing what to say.
”Well, we don’t have much time before the SGC
Christmas party,” said Jack realizing that he had to
prepare for the party. ”See you then, Carter.”
”Yes, sir.”
The Christmas party at the SGC started later that day.
As usual, there was lots of food, drinks and music.
And, of course, the room in which the party took place
was nicely decorated for Christmas.
Daniel and Janet’s behavior had started lots of gossip
on the base. Not that Sam and Jack had said anything,
but many other people had seen the doctor and the
archeologist acting a little too friendly. So,
everyone was looking forward to see if Daniel and
Janet were going to come together to the party.
Christmas music was playing when Sam arrived to the
party. She was dressed in a beautiful black dress
that just went well with her blonde hair. Jack was
with Teal’c, who had come back from his visit to his
family. The two of them saw Sam, and went to talk to
her. Jack was dressed quite casually, but he looked
very handsome to Sam.
”Hey, Carter. Happy Christmas!”
”Happy Christmas, Sir! Happy Christmas, Teal’c!”
Teal’c didn’t quite understand what this Tau’ri
celebration was, but everyone seemed to be wishing
each other a Happy Christmas. So, he wished a Happy
Christmas back at Carter.
”Happy Christmas, Major Carter.”
Daniel and Janet arrived to the Christmas party
shortly after that. The doctor was dressed in a white
dress that just looked wonderful on her. Daniel was
also looking very handsome. Daniel and Janet saw
their friends and went to see them.
“Hi, Sam. Hi, Jack. Teal’c, you’re back!” said Janet
with a smile.
”Indeed, doctor Frasier,” answered Teal’c.
”Hello, guys,” said Daniel, happy to see his friends.
Sam and Teal’c greeted Daniel.
Jack was NOT going to let this occasion pass by. He
went to see Daniel.
”A word with you, Daniel?” he said.
The two men separated from the rest of the group.
”Something’s wrong?” asked Daniel.
”I want to know what’s going on?”
”I don’t know what you’re talking about.” said Daniel
with his best innocent look.
”Come on, Daniel. You know what I am talking about.
You and the doc have been acting very friendly.”
Daniel looked as if he had no choice but to tell him
what was going on.
“You’re right, Jack. As a matter of fact, Janet and I
have starting seeing each other,” said Daniel.
”I had noticed that,” Jack replied sarcastically.
”Look, Jack. It is not as if we were doing something
wrong, isn’t it? I am a civilian, so regulations
aren’t a problem.”
”I know that,” said Jack knowing that Daniel was
right. “Look, I am happy for both of you. Really.” He
was sincere and he was also happy to have the
confirmation he wanted.
”Thanks. I’ll go to Janet now.”
”Okay.”
Daniel smiled at Janet as he came to see her. A song
started playing and people started moving towards the
dancing floor.
”Do you want to dance?” he asked her.
”Yes, sure.”
They went to the dancing floor.
”How did it go with the Colonel?” asked Janet.
”Not too bad. And you, with Sam and Teal’c?”
”No problem, they were just curious,” said Janet,
smiling.
Daniel smiled back to her. They both knew that their
plan was working well so far.
Daniel and Janet started dancing, looking at each
other. It was a perfect night for dancing, but it was
also time for the following part of the plan.
Daniel and Janet kissed. First, it was a sweet kiss,
but then it became more passionate.
Some people around them started cheering to them.
Sam was looking at her friends dancing, but she
started feeling something strange inside her when
Daniel and Janet kissed. She realized that she was
jealous of their happiness. Not that she wished them
bad, but she realized that she wanted to feel as happy
as they did. Seeing Daniel and Janet together had
shown her that something was missing in life. She
wasn’t quite complete.
Suddenly, she could not stand being there, surrounded
by a celebration. So, she left the room.
Jack saw her leaving and became concerned.
”Excuse me, Teal’c,” he told the Jaffa.
Sam went outside the base. It was a bit dark, but the
moon and the lights from the base gave enough light to
see. She sat on a rock, her coat protecting her
dress. She looked up and watched the stars. They
reminded her of her travels through the Stargate and
the planets she had visited with SG-1. She started to
think about how things had changed since joining the
SGC. Then she started to think about him. The way he
made her smile when he cracked a joke, or the way he
tried to understand her scientific explanations.
Suddenly, Sam felt a hand on her shoulder. But she was
relieved to see that there was no danger. It was him,
Colonel Jack O’Neill.
”Are you okay, Carter?” he asked as he took his hand
away from her shoulder.
”Yes, Sir. I just needed to be alone for a while.”
Jack was unconvinced. He felt that something was
bothering Sam. He sat down by her side, checking if
she would object. She didn’t. They sat silent for a
while, sharing this moment of peace together. A
moment later, she broke the silence.
”I guess I wasn’t ready for it to work so well,” she
confessed.
”What?” Jack asked, a bit confused.
”Daniel and Janet.”
”So, that is what is bothering you” said Jack,
understanding now.
”I am happy for them,” Sam explained.
”But you want to feel as happy as they do.” concluded
Jack.
Sam was surprised as she noticed how easy she had
confided on him.
They were once again silent. Jack looked at Sam, who
was surrounded by the night. He thought she looked
beautiful like this.
It was him who spoke first.
”Remember that time when we were suspected of being
zat’arcs?” asked Jack.
’How could I forget that?’ thought Sam.
”Yes, I remember,” she said, nodding.
”I said that I care about you.”
”Yes, you did.”
”That’s the truth, Sam.” He looked at her, and was
astonished again as how beautiful she was. “I feel the
same way as you do when I look at Daniel and Janet. I
have come to realize that there is something
incomplete in my life. Something that only you can
fill in.”
Tears came to Sam’s eyes, threatening to flow down her
face. She turned her face from Jack. She didn’t want
to show how touched she was by his words. Somehow, he
always found the right words to say.
Jack gently moved Sam’s face back to him and, just as
gently, he kissed her.
Joy overwhelmed them as their kiss became more
passionate.
Inside the party…
Daniel and Janet had stopped dancing. They were
talking, holding hands, standing a bit in retreat from
the dance floor. A song started playing. It was “I’ve
had the time of my life,” by Bill Medley and Jennifer
Warnes.
Now I've had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it's the truth
And I owe it all to you.
'Cause I've had the time of my life,
And I owe it all to you.
Daniel and Janet looked as Sam and Jack came back to
the room. That is when they noticed there was
something different about Sam and Jack. They seemed
happier. Somehow, Janet and Daniel knew what had
happened between Sam and Jack. It was a sweet revenge
for Janet and Daniel.
I've been waiting for so long
Now I've finally found someone
To stand by me
We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical
Fantasy
The archeologist and the doctor looked at each other
and smiled with complicity. They got their friends
together, if only of a moment. The night seemed even
better now because of that. However, Janet and Daniel
knew there was something missing. It was the end of
the act. They had to tell the truth to Sam and Jack
about how they tried to get them back for their trick
at the movies. But what was the truth? It wasn’t as
clear as before.
Now with passion in our eyes
There's no way we could disguise it
Secretly
So we take each other's hand
'Cause we seem to understand
The urgency just remember
As he listened to the song, Daniel thought about the
last days, and knew something deep inside him. He had
not stopped thinking about Janet and the way she made
him feel. He knew he wasn’t supposed to feel this
way, but he couldn’t help it. He had come to realize
that he truly loved Janet. But he couldn’t let her
know, because it would spoil their friendship if she
didn’t love him back. It was better if she remained
his friend rather than lose her completely. So,
Daniel took his hand away from Janet’s hand, as afraid
that his hand could give up his feelings.
You're the one thing
I can't get enough of
So I'll tell you something
This could be love because
Janet felt Daniel’s hand leave her own hand. There
was now cold where there had been warmth. It was
clear that Daniel didn’t want her, and that filled her
with sorrow.
She didn’t want to feel this way. She had been aware
that this had to end at one point. However, it is a
very different situation when the end is almost there.
She knew that she would miss how good she felt around
him. She would miss the good moments they had lived
together. She would have to live knowing that she
loved him, but that he didn’t.
I've had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it's the truth
And I owe it all to you’
’I don’t want to feel this way. This is supposed to be
all an act that will soon be over… but it was the time
of my life’
With my body and soul
I want you more than you'll ever know
So we'll just let it go
Don't be afraid to lose control
Yes I know what's on your mind
When you say, "Stay with me tonight”
Just remember…
’I shouldn’t be thinking of you this way. But I can’t
deny how I feel about you. These last days have been
great, I have enjoyed every moment’
You're the one thing
I can't get enough of
So I'll tell you something
This could be love because
Their eyes met almost by accident. But as they looked
at each other, Daniel and Janet were surprised by what
they saw in the eyes of the other one. It was true
love.
I've had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
Could it be possible? With that simple look, they
knew it was true. They were in love, and more
important, they were loved in return.
They had been caught in their own game, and there was
no way back.
Their faces approached, slowly. Their lips joined and
they kissed.
”I love you,” they said at the same time when they
stopped kissing. They both laughed as they realized
that they had spoken at the same time.
”Happy Christmas, Daniel,” said Janet.
”Happy Christmas, Janet,” said Daniel taking Janet in
his arms.
Sam and Jack looked at their friends and smiled. They
truly were meant for each other.
It was love’s sweet revenge.
THE END :)
